Jeepers Creepers Retrospective Review
By: Nik S
Horror movies in 2001 were either satirical, over-the-top, or teenage horror flicks. Somewhere right in the middle of all that was a film known as Jeepers Creepers. The movie is certainly a product of its time, as it's a campy teen horror that, unlike today's films, slowly reveals its main antagonist. The film takes heavy inspiration from an old 1930's tune of the same name but twists its lyrics to create its central plot. Though it was heavily inspired by a real-life horror story in Michigan (which you can read in our Jeepers Creepers 3 review). The film is able to still able to hold up to a certain degree, despite a few cinematic flaws.
The film is better known for its monster stalker the Creeper, a winged creature that needs to eat selected body parts from its victims in order to regenerate and continue living. Most of the horror that follows this monster is simply from the unknown: what is this monster following Trish and Darry, what does it want, why does it need an old truck if it has wings? While there are some interesting and new ideas that the film starts with, after the first thirty minutes though it falls on old horror cliches that every other early 2000 movie used. The first part, where Trish and Darry are searching the abandoned church before the Creeper comes back is the best part of the entire film.
The movie slowly disintegrates as time goes on as it just becomes another monster hunt. It plays it a little too safe and by the numbers. While everything that happens is a little old and bland, the monster itself shows off some unique design choices. Its entire body is essentially a giant weapon for it to use on its unsuspecting prey. Though, despite all this, it still makes you curious why it needs an ax to kill when it has claws and fangs that work just as well. All this aside, viewers can still turn this flick on and enjoy a campy thrill ride from beginning to end.
