Halloween Horror Treats to Watch: Trick 'r Treat

By: Nik S
Almost everyone happens to have a Halloween tradition, be it watching classic horror movies, dressing up, or going to haunted houses. In my household, we always have to dust off our copy of Trick 'r Treat in order to get us into the right mood for the season. It's a movie that my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I found at a Family Video, yes those are still around. We thought at the time that it looked like a silly B movie that went the straight-to-video despite being distributed by Warner Brothers. The cover alone made us think it was the right amount of campiness to give us a chuckle or two while we stuffed our faces with popcorn. We were only partially right, as it can get a bit campy at times, but overall we had stumbled upon an underappreciated classic.

The movie is written and directed by Michael Dougherty, known for writing Superman Returns and X2. Though what makes this film unique is that it's based on a short cartoon Dougherty did back in 1996 called Season's Greetings which has the returning character of Sam (the small child with the burlap sack on his head). The film was originally set to release in theaters in late October, but Warner Brothers chickened out at first since its release window would have been the same as one of the Saw movies. After that, it kept getting delayed to the point it was just shelved. Eventually, they decided to silently slip it under everyone's radar as a straight-to-video release around 2007.
Much like my review of Hereditary, knowing too much about the film will spoil the experience. All you really need to know is that it's a paranormal good time with every creature that bumps in the night. The film is set up as an anthology and follows many interweaving stories. The entire movie takes place in a fictional town located somewhere in Ohio. It's, of course, Halloween night and all the horrors happen to be roaming the streets for a little blood-soaked fun. So if you're trying to find a movie to get you into the Halloween spirit then look no further than Trick 'r Treat. It shouldn't be too hard to find as it's probably in a Walmart bargain bin or on a streaming service (YouTube, iTunes, Vudu, and Prime for about $3).
