Halloween Horror Treats to Play: Outlast

If Amnesia the Dark Descent seems like something you might be interested in, but don't want to deal with the sanity mechanic then look no further than Outlast. Outlast is a first-person survival horror game that is developed and published by an indie studio called Red Barrels. It was first released on PC back in 2014, then a year later on consoles, and most recently on the Nintendo Switch. The thing that helps set this game apart from other horror games is the overall atmosphere and more modern horror elements blended with some familiar gameplay.

The story is pretty simple: you're an investigative journalist, Miles Upshur, who receives a tip about something horrible going on in the Mount Massive Asylum. It turns out his tip is correct as inhuman psychopaths roam the halls, and they're all after you. The only thing Miles happens to be equipped with is his trusty video camera that has a night vision function. You'll have to navigate your way through dangerous territory, run and hide from menacing abominations, and uncover the truth of what's going on in the asylum.

This is one of those games where if you have a few friends over, you can all enjoy watching as the person with the control jumps out of their seat with fright. If you are playing it by yourself then you may need to take panic attack breaks as this game can get scary in almost an instant. If you want even more Outlast then you're in luck, there is DLC and a sequel. The DLC, Whistleblower, is an excellent add-on that wraps up any loose ends the main story had, while also cramming a bunch of scares in just a short amount of time. The sequel isn't as good, but it's still rather enjoyable.
