Halloween Horror Treats to Play: Amnesia the Dark Descent

By: Nik S
So maybe this Halloween you're not in the mood for a movie, but instead a horror game. One game that, much like Five Nights at Freddy's, helped to relaunch the horror genre and inspire a lot of games that came after (like Outlast). The game only has one or two monsters, but it uses story telling and atmosphere to help make this a good game. There is a strong influence from H.P. Lovecraft especially with a sanity feature when your character stays in the dark or looks at the monster too long. The one thing that separates this from many other mainstream horror games is that there is no combat. You have to hide in the shadows and run, that's it.

The game has been out since 2010 and can be found on Steam and PlayStation 4, so it's easy to get a hold of a copy. The story has a simple plot, as you take control of Daniel inside of a large foreboding castle. He forced amnesia upon himself and left a message to remind him of one thing: to kill his boss. He has to unravel his past which delves into a deep dark secret. It's a simple premise with basic controls, but it all works so well when you have to explore to get deep into the story.
