Halloween Horror Treats to Watch: The Return of the Living Dead

By: Nik S
To start this blurb out, no this is not related to Romero's Dead series in any way, but it does take heavy inspiration from it. The Return of the Living Dead is a dark horror comedy set in the realm of the living dead with a large twist. Imagine your typical zombie, rotting flesh and all, but undefeatable in every way shape and form. It's a film that is written and directed by Dan O'Bannon who worked on films such as Heavy Metal and Lifeforce. The movie is popularly known for introducing the concept of zombies needing to eat human brains as opposed to just their flesh like previous iterations. The soundtrack is also widely popular as it has a large amount of deathrock and punk rock bands of the mid 80s.

The plot is pretty basic, as it tells a story of how a warehouse owner with his two employees, a mortician, and a group of teenagers deal with the of horde of zombies that they accidentally released on the town. The thing is, head shots do not work on these zombies so there's no stopping them. You can cut off a limb, but then it will just become sentient and attack. Even burning these creatures do nothing as their ashes will go up into the clouds and rain down a toxin to resurrect even more zombies. It's a thrill-ride from start to finish that really needs more love and recognition, as it's often overlooked because of its weak sequels.
