Halloween Horror Treats to Watch: Tales of Halloween

By: Nik S
If Trick 'r Treat sounds like your kind of movie but don't feel like buying it, but do have Netflix then why not check out Tales of Halloween? This is one of those films where you're deep into the bizarre depths of Netflix and it actually turns out to be entertaining rather than a snooze fest. Don't go into this movie with high expectations, mind you, as it's not the Halloween movie to beat all Halloween movies. It does, however, just get you into the right mindset for the holiday much like Trick 'r Treat can. It's one of those kinds of movies you can watch with a few pals as trick or treaters come to your door.

Tales of Halloween is a more recent film, releasing in 2015, and is considered a comedy horror (where Trick 'r Treat is a horror with comedic elements). The film is an anthology, but where it differs from Trick 'r Treat is that it has twelve directors compared to just one. Each story has its own director and does have characters that make cameos to show you it all takes place in the same town. Because of this, each story has its own unique feel and style. There are ten parts of the movie, each with their own pros and cons, but they're short enough that it never feels like they're dragging on. My two personal favorites are Sweet Tooth and Friday the 31st, as they both have just the right amount of campy dialogue and unique practical effects.

The movie covers all kinds of creatures that go bump in the night, like ghosts and ghouls. Each monster has their own creative style with awesome details and minimal use of computer animation. Not saying all of them are award-winning costumes, but they're certainly easy on the eyes (if you can overlook the blood and distorted faces). Do keep in mind that since each story is short that not everything can get fleshed out. For most stories it works out perfectly fine that way, others feel like it may have needed a longer time frame to iron out some details in their plot. All-in-all, if you're just trying to get into that spooky mood, this will take you to where you need to go.
